Do They Need to Be Plugged in?

If you want to get high levels of sound from your acoustic-electric guitar, it must be connected to an amplifier, otherwise, your guitar will act as a classical guitar.

You can easily play your acoustic-electric guitar like an acoustic guitar without plugging it in. Most musicians use the acoustic-electric guitar as acoustic or electric-acoustic in case of need.

Does They Need A Preamp?

There is no need for a preamp for acoustic-electric guitars because these guitars already have a built-in amp. 

But when you input your acoustic-electric guitar into the audio interface, the interface can amplify the line level signal if the audio interface itself has a preamp. 

When the volume of your guitar reaches the line level, the signal is amplified and a higher sensation is provided.
